Notes

  • I keep pack weight low. This is my minimal Dolomites kit—it balances warmth and versatility. The wool base layers work for hiking or sleeping, the Ghost Whisperer down jacket adds a lot of warmth for very little weight, and wool manages odor better than most synthetics.
  • I skipped trekking poles because I traveled with only a carry-on and poles typically aren’t allowed in carry-on luggage. I would have preferred them for stability on narrower sections of trail. My favorite poles are the Black Diamond Alpine Carbon Cork; the aluminum version is also solid.
  • Via ferrata gear isn’t included here. If you plan to take side trails with via ferrata, bring a harness, leash, gloves, and a helmet.
